Uglydoll; the new beautiful

by Kym on January 27, 2013 · 63 comments

As I was growing up there were several must have toys that that would sell out at shops and be the must have toy for Christmas. The Cabbage Patch Doll, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, My Little Pony, Transformers and He Man…..by the power of grey skull,  ah the memories!

Uglydoll Logo

One of the most recent must have toys of the 2000′s and has now excitedly hit Australian shores are the Uglydoll. The Uglydoll has got to cult status in the US with a legion of fans including some well know celebrities and new additions to the range sells out quickly!

Until they had arrived at Toys “R” Us here, I will admit I had never heard of or seen an Uglydoll. Also at first I will admit that I wasn’t quite sure what to make of them. They were certainly different looking. However, once I started reading about Uglydolls and looked through the collection, the little critter started to grow on me and there are a couple which I now find quite adorable. Plus the reaction that Miss S gives when she looks at the pictures on the site, or plays with the Clip On Tub Nubury, which we were sent, is quite amazing. She usually sequels with delight, points and says “cute”.

Uglydoll Selection of range

In the world of Uglydoll, “ugly” means unique and different and they are about celebrating who you are inside and out. They say “ugly” is the new beautiful. The gang of Uglydolls express themselves “through laughs, tears, love, adventures and also candy”.

The range at Toys “R” Us is growing and currently includes plush characters, clip on’s and accessories. There are characters like Uppy, CozyMonster, Ket and one of my now favourites (and apparentally extremely popular with their fan base) Ice-Bat.

Uglydoll Ice-BatEach Uglydoll has it own personailty and it is written on the tag so you can pick one that is especially for you. For instance Ice-Bat’s personality tag reads….”Ice-Bat, comes from an Ice Cave and loves hiding inside Ice Chests. Everything he touches turns to Ice-Bat profoundly he warms your heart. Ice-Bat thinks you are cool and he wants to chill with you. He wants to hang out with you…or just hang upside-down, if that’s OK with you! Ice-Bat is there for you when you feel like you may be loosing your cool, or feeling like a fool. Don’t panic! Don’t stress! Grab Ice-Bat and put him to the test.”

Uglydoll Cookie Chef Babo

And then there is the cute Cookie Chef Babo who’s personality tag reads..”Cookie Chef Babo. If the cookie is the reward and baking is the hard work, then Babo knows you understand what it takes to get from point A to point B. It takes about 2 minutes? No no Babo… OK, look… Sure you can grab packaged cookies or pop some ready dough in the microwave with all that radiation, etc… but if you work at it, and give it your all, you can enjoy the truly rewarding taste of baked goodness.. OK, he ate the dough, nevermind.”

Loved by children and adults alike, the Uglydoll are great for helping children express themselves I think. Take Cookie Chef Babo for instance. He is all about not giving up and the concept of try and try again. If something will help a child who is shy or has trouble communicating I think it is a great thing.
